On behalf of the Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA), forsa Gesellschaft für Sozialforschung und statistische Analysen mbH, Berlin and Dortmund (forsa), carried out a representative study on contraceptive behaviour amongst adults in the Federal Republic of Germany.
The study sought, on the one hand, to determine which contraceptive methods and techniques are used by adult women and men. On the other hand, it examined the respondents’ information-seeking behaviour, their preferred sources of information and their knowledge of contraception.
The target group for the survey was women and men aged between 20 and 44 who had had sexual intercourse in the previous twelve months. A total of 1,501 interviews were conducted. The survey was carried out from 5 to 15 March 2007 using computer-assisted telephone interviews.
This latest representative survey is based on the study on contraceptive behaviour conducted by forsa in 2003 on behalf of the BZgA. The 2003 results are therefore presented in the report for comparison in some instances. Questions on hormonal contraception for men and on so-called ‘long-cycle contraception’ – i.e. the use of a hormonal contraceptive for several months without interruption, thereby suppressing menstruation for several cycles – were also included.
